What Size Snuggy Pod Do I Need?

The question we are asked more than any other is not about blackout fabric or how long setup takes. It is simply this: will it fit my bed?

It is a fair question, and UK bed sizes make it a trickier one than it sounds. Beds sold as "double" are not always the same width, older frames rarely match modern standards, and a lot of people have honestly never measured their mattress. So here is everything you need to work it out in about two minutes.

Measure the mattress, not the bed frame

This is the single most useful thing in this whole article. The Snuggy Pod sits over your mattress, so the mattress is what matters, not the outer edge of the frame.

Frames vary enormously. Two beds with identical mattresses can measure 20cm apart across the outside, depending on how chunky the sides are. Measure the mattress width and length, write the numbers down, and compare them to the sizes below.

Tip. Measure across the middle of the mattress rather than at the corners, and measure in centimetres. Most UK bed listings quote both centimetres and feet, but centimetres are far easier to compare.

Snuggy Pod sizes at a glance

The Snuggy Pod comes in three sizes, and each one is built around a standard UK mattress footprint:

Single Pod. 90cm wide by 190cm long. Made for single beds and cabin beds.

Double Pod. 135cm wide by 190cm long. Made for double beds, mid sleepers and bunks.

King Pod. 150cm wide by 200cm long. Made for king beds.

Each Pod has roughly 5cm of tolerance either way, so a mattress a couple of centimetres off the stated size will still work comfortably.

Insight. Standard UK mattresses run 90cm for a single, 120cm for a small double, 135cm for a double, 150cm for a king and 180cm for a super king. Our three Pod sizes map directly onto the single, double and king widths, which covers the large majority of UK bedrooms.

What if you have a small double?

A small double, sometimes called a three quarter bed, is 120cm wide. This comes up constantly. One customer recently got in touch wanting a Pod for her grandson, whose bed was a small double, and she was not sure which way to go.

The answer is the Double Pod. At 135cm it is wider than a 120cm mattress, so it sits with a little slack rather than pulling tight. The structure still stands properly and it darkens the space just as well. It simply looks a little roomier at the sides.

Note. Going one size up is almost always better than going one size down. A Pod that is a touch too big will still stand and still darken the space. A Pod that is too small will strain at the seams and never sit right.

Bunk beds, mid sleepers and cabin beds

These work well, with one thing to check first: headroom.

You need at least 120cm of clearance between the mattress and whatever is above it, whether that is the ceiling or the underside of the top bunk. Any less and the Pod cannot reach its full shape, which makes it feel cramped rather than cosy.

Measure from the top of the mattress straight up. If you have the clearance, a Single Pod on a cabin bed or a Double Pod on a mid sleeper is one of the nicest uses of the product we see.

Your frame needs four fixed points

The Pod secures with ribbons at each corner, so it needs four solid things to tie to. On most beds that means the four posts or legs of the frame.

This is worth checking before you order, because it is the one place a fit goes wrong for reasons that have nothing to do with size. A divan base with no visible legs, or a low platform frame with nothing to loop a ribbon around, needs a workaround.

Warning. The Pod is designed to be supported by a bed frame. If your frame has no posts, legs or slats you can reach, send us a photo before ordering and we will tell you honestly whether it will work. We would much rather do that than have you post one back.

Student rooms and other unusual frames

Every September we hear from students heading into halls, and the same problem comes up: nobody knows what the bed is until they move in. University beds are commonly single at 90cm, but some rooms have a small double, and the frames are often solid boxes rather than posted frames.

One customer this year sent us photos of the room he was moving into, then more photos of the frame he had set up at home, just to be sure. That is genuinely the best approach. If you can get a photo and a mattress measurement, we can tell you what will work.

If you get it wrong

Sometimes a bed turns out to be a size nobody expected, or a room is smaller than it looked. Every Pod comes with our 14 night cosy trial, so if the fit is not right you can send it back for a refund under our returns policy.

We would still rather help you get it right first time. Measuring takes two minutes and saves a fortnight of wondering.

TL;DR. Measure your mattress, not your frame. Single Pod is 90 x 190cm, Double Pod is 135 x 190cm, King Pod is 150 x 200cm, each with about 5cm of tolerance. Small double at 120cm takes the Double Pod. Allow 120cm of headroom above the mattress on bunks and mid sleepers. Check your frame has four points to tie the corner ribbons to. When in doubt, size up and send us a photo.

Not sure which size you need? Have a look at our Snuggy Pod size guide for the full measurements, or send us your mattress dimensions and a photo of your bed and we will tell you exactly what fits.
