5 Types Of Kids’ Beds - Snuggy

A good child's bed is more than just a place to sleep – it should be a comfort zone, a play area, and a personal space. With so many different types available, it can be a challenge to pick the right one. To help, we've put together this guide to the different types of kids' beds, explaining the features and benefits of each one.

Standard beds

The standard bed frame comes in a variety of sizes – cot, toddler, junior, single and double – and is made from a range of materials including wood, metal and upholstered fabric. The standard bed frame is the most versatile option, with a wide range of sizes available to suit children of different ages.

Junior or children's beds are a step up from toddler beds and a step down from single beds. They're suitable for children from around three years old up to about six years old (up to 5'2" or 157cm). They come with integrated sides to help prevent falling out of bed.

Bunk beds

Bunk beds are a popular choice for families with more than one child, as they allow two children to sleep in the space of one bed. They consist of two beds stacked on top of each other, accessible via a fixed ladder.

They come in twin-over-twin and twin-over-full configurations. They can be disassembled into two single beds, which is useful as children grow older and want their own space.

Loft beds

Loft beds are raised off the floor, with the space underneath used for other furniture such as a desk, shelves, or a small sofa. This makes them a great space-saving option for smaller bedrooms.

They're typically designed for older children and teenagers who need a dedicated space for studying or hobbies. Loft beds are similar to bunk beds, but without the lower sleeping surface.

Trundle beds

Trundle beds feature a second bed that is stored underneath the main bed, which can be pulled out when needed. This makes them an excellent choice for children who often have sleepovers, as they can provide an extra sleeping space for a guest without taking up too much room permanently.

Trundle beds are available in many styles and sizes. They can be raised to the same height as the main bed to create a king-sized sleeping surface, or left at a lower height for a separate sleeping space.

Themed beds

Themed beds are designed to spark the imagination of young children, incorporating designs that might resemble cars, houses, castles, or even spaceships. While they can be expensive and might be outgrown quickly, they can make bedtime a more exciting experience for children who might otherwise resist going to sleep.

Themed beds can range from simple designs that incorporate a theme through colour and minor design elements, to elaborate constructions that closely resemble the theme they're based on. Some themed beds also incorporate useful features like storage or bookshelves.
